Mumbai’s monsoon is meant to be enjoyed thoroughly, which means stepping outside and getting drenched in the downpour! The best place to do this is at Marine Drive, a 3.6km seaside boulevard in South Mumbai flanked by Art Deco buildings on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. Walk along the promenade from Girgaon Chowpatty all the way down to what’s called Land’s End (near NCPA theatre). Grab a bhutta (roasted corn on the cob sprinkled with salt, chilli powder, and lime juice) and get soaked as the waves crash over the stone parapet onto the promenade. In the evenings as the streetlights come on, the drive is cast in the golden glow of the “Queen’s Necklace”. Other places in the city to enjoy the monsoon are Worli Sea Face and Bandra Bandstand; the latter has the added advantage of a fantastic view of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, an iconic cable-stayed bridge that connects South Mumbai to the suburbs.
